Each of these joints can be painful from time to time – but what does pain mean and how do we manage it? Mr Shelain Patel has the answers.
Those aches and pains that can suddenly hit us in our joints are really annoying (how’s that for an understatement!), and we rush to the Pharmacy for those pain killers and heat ointments, or to the freezer for ice packs.
And of course sometimes they work well, although there are no guarantees! Is all this medication doing any good or simply staving off the inevitable?
- Our Hips are the largest joints in our body, but they are prone to both injury and wear & tear – although how do we know if it’s serious?
- Knees are smaller joints but more complex – and as complexity increases so does the probability of complications.
- Shoulders can be tricky; there’s a lot of opportunity for “referred pain”, which means something else is happening in our body that really has nothing to do with our shoulder joint.
- Elbows may be associated with the funny bone, but how do golfers get tennis elbow, whilst tennis players get golfer’s elbow?
So it’s clear that, to manage these aches and pains we really need to listen to our body – that’s all very well, but how can we hear what it’s telling us?
To clarify everything we’ve asked back Mr Shelain Patel (who gave us a brilliant talk back in February) to help us better deal with all those aches and pains; and, more importantly help us identify if it’s something that needs urgent attention or will simply go away on it’s own! And if it does go away, then where does it go?
